Help & FAQ

Make better word searches, faster.

A practical guide to choosing words, setting difficulty, fixing words that do not fit, printing clean worksheets, and managing saved puzzles.

Quick start

  1. Name the activity. Use a clear title such as “Weather Vocabulary” or “Family Camping Trip.”
  2. Add the word list. Separate words or phrases with commas or new lines. Eight to fourteen entries usually creates a balanced puzzle.
  3. Choose the challenge. Pick easy for newer solvers, medium for a mixed-direction puzzle, or hard for the widest range of directions.
  4. Generate and play. Select Generate my word search, review your words, and solve directly in the grid. Play on website returns keyboard focus to the board and hides the answer key.
  5. Keep a copy if you want. Printing and downloading are optional. Use Print puzzle for a print dialog or Download PDF for a two-page worksheet; Download playable puzzle saves the offline HTML game.

Play with your finger, mouse or keyboard

The studio grid is playable immediately, including the first sample puzzle. Drag from the first letter to the last letter of a word in a straight horizontal, vertical or diagonal line. You can also tap the two endpoints separately, which can be easier on a small screen. Reverse selection is accepted when it spells a listed word. The board prevents page scrolling during a swipe, while the rest of the page scrolls normally.

For keyboard play, Tab into the board, move with the arrow keys and press Enter or Space on each endpoint. Escape cancels a pending selection. The counter announces progress, found words change color and are crossed off the bank, and Restart game clears your marks without generating a different puzzle. Revealing the answer key does not count words as found.

Your generated puzzle keeps its own title and word list. Editing the form does not silently change the game already on screen. Select Generate my word search or Update & play to use your latest edits. New grid rearranges the current words and is unavailable while the title or word list has pending edits, so it cannot silently ignore a new custom list. Reopening a saved puzzle returns you to its exact game and restores locally saved progress when available.

Download the right version

Download playable puzzle saves a small, self-contained .html game with the exact current grid. Open the downloaded file in a browser to solve it offline using touch, mouse or keyboard. It does not fetch fonts, scripts, analytics or advertisements. Progress is remembered when that browser permits local storage; some browsers restrict storage for downloaded files, so persistence is not guaranteed.

Download PDF remains the two-page printable version. Existing PDFs are not changed into interactive games by this update. Some PDF readers offer drawing tools for manual annotation, but that is different from the site's word-checking player. On phones, a file manager, email preview or managed device may block HTML games; use a browser capable of opening the local file, or play the same puzzle directly in the studio. Downloading a file does not automatically launch it.

Choosing a useful word list

A strong word-search list has a clear theme and a mix of word lengths. For a 12 × 12 grid, favor short and medium words. A 16 × 16 or 18 × 18 grid can handle longer vocabulary and more entries. Avoid lists made entirely of long phrases because fewer combinations can fit without crossing.

For lesson review, combine essential terms with a few familiar words so the first discoveries build confidence. For parties or family activities, names, places, foods, hobbies, and shared memories make the worksheet feel personal. Invented terms are accepted too; there is no dictionary-membership requirement. The site suggests fixes for some common spelling errors but will not apply them during generation. Choose Apply fixes when appropriate, and review names and specialized terms before printing.

Using another language

Use the Translate selector in the header to switch the puzzle maker between English, Spanish, and French. Your selection is remembered in this browser. You can enter your own words in the chosen language, or select a translated theme from Printables; English-only themes are labeled rather than automatically machine-translated. Switching languages does not alter a puzzle you already created or a puzzle in your saved history.

The grid uses uppercase letters without accent marks for consistent searching: for example, été appears as ETE. The preview labels follow the selected interface language; PDF instructions follow the puzzle’s original language, including for saved puzzles. Every PDF includes an answer key. English spelling suggestions are active only when English is selected; please review names and specialized words yourself. Informational and policy pages are currently in English.

Difficulty explained

Easy is best for young beginners, quick warm-ups, and anyone who benefits from predictable scanning. Medium adds diagonal searching and works well for general classroom or family use. Hard includes backward directions and is better for experienced solvers or longer activity sessions.

Grid size and difficulty work together. A larger grid does not automatically make a puzzle harder if the words are long and obvious. For a real challenge, use a larger grid with short words and the hard direction setting. For easier reading, use a compact grid and a smaller, familiar word bank.

Printing and PDF tips

The PDF is formatted as a standard portrait worksheet with a separate answer key. Before printing many copies, preview one page and confirm your printer’s paper size, margins, and scaling. “Fit to printable area” is usually the safest setting. Color is not required for the puzzle page; the answer key uses highlighting, so color or grayscale both work.

If browser printing includes unwanted headers or footers, disable the browser’s header-and-footer option. If a grid looks too small, regenerate it with fewer or shorter words rather than enlarging it after export, which can reduce legibility.

Saved history and favorites

Each generated puzzle is automatically added to the Saved Puzzles shelf in the current browser. Use the star to keep important puzzles at the top, Open to restore the exact grid and settings, Download to recreate its PDF, or Delete to remove it. Clearing recent history preserves favorites.

History is intentionally local and private. It does not sync between devices, browsers, or private-browsing sessions. Export important worksheets as PDFs if you need a durable copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a custom word search?

Enter a title, add at least three activities or words separated by commas or new lines, choose a difficulty and grid size, and select Generate my word search. Your own words appear in a fresh playable grid on the website. You do not need to download or print it.

Can I play with names or made-up words?

Yes. Custom entries do not have to appear in a dictionary. Names, invented words and personal phrases work within the same limit of 3–18 letters and up to 16 different entries. The grid uses uppercase Latin letters with spaces and accents removed. Spelling suggestions are optional: select Apply fixes only if you want those changes.

Can I use phrases such as ice skating?

Yes. The phrase stays together and spaces are removed inside the grid, so ice skating appears as ICESKATING.

What do the difficulty levels change?

Easy favors forward horizontal and vertical placement. Medium adds diagonal placement. Hard allows words to appear in every supported direction, including backward directions.

Can a word disappear from the printable?

The current generator retries crowded layouts and can increase the grid size so every accepted word fits. If an entry is longer than 18 letters or a complete layout cannot be made, the printable is blocked and the site names the word that needs attention.

Does the PDF include answers?

Yes. Every PDF contains the puzzle on the first page and a highlighted answer key on the second page.

Can I solve a puzzle using a touchscreen?

Yes. Drag across a straight word in the puzzle studio, or tap its first and last letters. Mouse dragging and keyboard arrow keys with Enter on each endpoint also work. Found words stay highlighted and are crossed off the list. Restart game clears progress without changing the grid.

Which download can I play without internet?

Choose Download playable puzzle for a self-contained HTML file. Open it in a browser with JavaScript enabled; it needs no internet, account or installation. A phone's Files or email preview may not run JavaScript, so open the file in a browser when supported, or play directly on the website. The separate PDF download is a printable worksheet, not the interactive game.

Where are my saved puzzles stored?

Saved puzzles and favorites are stored only in the local storage of the browser and device you are using. They are not synced to an account and may disappear if browser data is cleared.

Is Wordplay Press free?

Yes. The puzzle maker, printable themes, local history, printing, and PDF download are available without an account. The site may use advertising to support operating costs.

Can I use the puzzles in a classroom or activity program?

Yes. You may print generated puzzles for personal, classroom, family, club, library, and community-program activities, provided the words you enter are appropriate and you have permission to use any protected material.

Which languages are available?

The puzzle maker offers English, Spanish, and French interface controls. Eight ready-made themes and four suggested themes have reviewed vocabulary in Spanish and French; other themes are clearly marked as English word lists. Custom entries are not automatically translated. The help and policy articles are currently available in English.

Troubleshooting

A word cannot be placed

The generator retries the layout and enlarges the grid when needed. It will not silently print an incomplete word bank. If you see a warning, shorten the named phrase or reduce the number of long entries, then generate again.

The PDF did not download

Check whether your browser blocked automatic downloads, then try again. On a managed school or workplace device, download permissions may be controlled by an administrator.

Saved puzzles disappeared

Browser cleanup tools, private-browsing mode, storage restrictions, or switching devices can remove local history. Wordplay Press cannot restore local data that has been cleared.
