Why we built Wordplay Press
For the personal introduction behind the project, read About me. This page explains the tool, how it works and its limitations.
Making a custom word search should take less time than solving one. Wordplay Press turns a topic or activity list into a polished puzzle in seconds, then creates a printable PDF with a matching answer key. The generator is designed for classrooms, family gatherings, community programs, road trips, parties, and quiet afternoons.
Unlike a library of one-size-fits-all worksheets, every puzzle begins with the words you choose. That makes it useful for spelling lists, science vocabulary, seasonal themes, hobbies, names, memories, or nearly any appropriate subject that fits inside the grid.
Made in your browser
Puzzle generation, saved history, and PDF creation happen on your device.
Local browser storage
Saved history stays in this browser and can be removed when browser data is cleared. Website providers may still process technical requests.
Tested output
Each generated puzzle tracks the position and direction of every placed word for its answer key.
Free to use
The core puzzle maker, printing, downloads, and local favorites are available without sign-up.
How the generator works
The generator cleans the words you enter, removes spaces inside multi-word phrases, and attempts to place each entry in a randomized grid. Difficulty controls which directions are available: easy puzzles favor straightforward horizontal and vertical placement, while harder puzzles add diagonals and reverse directions. Empty squares are filled with random letters.
The downloadable PDF contains two pages: the activity sheet and a highlighted answer key. The PDF is assembled in your browser without creating a Wordplay Press account. Check the word list and print preview before distributing a worksheet; results can vary by browser, device, and printer.
Who the site is for
Wordplay Press is useful to adults preparing or using activities, including educators, parents and caregivers, librarians, club leaders and puzzle fans. Children should use the website with the guidance of a parent, guardian or educator. The operator must assess the audience and applicable child-privacy requirements before configuring advertising; this description is not a legal age classification.
Independence and advertising
Wordplay Press is independently operated. Advertising may support the cost of keeping the tool free, but advertisers do not control puzzle results, editorial explanations, recommendations, or policies. Advertising will be labeled and kept away from primary navigation and puzzle controls.
Corrections and contact
We aim for clear instructions, accurate puzzle behavior, and honest descriptions of the service. The Contact page lists current public channels. We consider correction reports as capacity allows and update affected content when a correction is made.
